May 17th, St. Augustine, FL Speedway officials are busy setting up the bullring in the infield for Saturday night’s Demolition Derby, part of a busy schedule of racing events slated for WFOY Night this Saturday evening. “We had a lot of fun with this when we assisted with the St. Johns County Fair’s derby back in March,” says speedway manager Louis Smith. “Everybody who participated wanted to do it again, so here we are.”In addition to the derby, Saturday’s events also include features in the Late Model, Sportsman, Rick’s Muffler Modified, Thunder Truck and Alpha Communications Hobby Stock divisions. The Daytona Antique Racing Association will also visit for two feature races, one sprint class and one stock. “We were serious when we billed May’s events as ‘Motor MAYhem’,” says Smith. “With last week’s SARA race, this weekend’s Demolition Derby and next week’s Mod Squad Invasion, there’s not a night this month when the program isn’t jam packed.” The Demolition Derby will take place early in the program to make use of natural sunlight, necessary for an infield event.Scott Lagasse, Jr. will get a second chance this weekend to make his 2000 Late Model debut, this time in the local Late Model division. Lagasse, who was denied the opportunity to compete last week in the SARA Late Model Sportsman event by SARA officials, is eager to get back behind the wheel. Late Model points leader Donnie Oden has a slim lead over Jeremy Fitch and Jody Turner in the division. The Sportsman return after a two week layoff with Todd Ponce ready to resume his charge up the ARA national points championship ladder. Ponce, who enters this week facing a $200 bounty paid to anyone who can beat him, is fresh off of four consecutive wins and four perfect scores, which have catapulted him to the top five in national points. Jason Garver and Shaw Hallman look to slow Ponce’s charge. Chuck Cumby paced the field last week in the Rick’s Muffler Modified division, holding off a challenge from Robert Deal, who along with Marc Kinley were sent to the hospital earlier in the evening only to return for the feature and post top five finishes. The field is expected to swell this weekend as drivers prepare for next week’s Mod Squad Invasion. Deal expanded his points lead over an idle Jimmy Britts and, through his charger points, over race winner Cumby. Brad Pilinko maintained his points lead in the Alpha Communications Hobby Stock division last week, stretching his lead slightly over race winner Chris Manucy. Jody Stratton, who started at the rear of the feature because of a singing engagement, broke an axle early in the event and finished 17th. The Hobby Stock class boasted a 19 car field last weekend, the highest of the season. The Tattoo Dee’s Old Rooster Mini Stocks are off this weekend. The Daytona Antique Racing Association is in town for two different feature races, one in the sprint class and one in their stock class. DARA, who visited the speedway twice during SpeedFest 2000, features 1950’s style and jalopy-type cars in their stock division and scale open wheel cars in their sprint division. Ticket prices are $10 for General Admission, $8 for Students and Seniors, and only $2 for children ages 7-12. Under 7 is admitted free. A $25 family pack allows two adults and all household children 18 and under admission into the grandstands. In appreciation of America’s service men and women, all military personnel, active and retired, plus family, are admitted half price with ID. Grandstand gates open at 5:00pm, with racing action beginning at 6:45 pm. The Demolition Derby will take place at approximately 7:45 pm.
