AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY
Dunkin Cruises to Third Feature Win
By Larry Vergon

Auburndale, FL (November 6, 1999)- Dave Dunkin benefited from three cars scheduled to start in front of him electing to start the 25 lap feature race at the rear and moved from a scheduled outside fourth row starting spot to the outside of the front row. He took the lead on the first lap and was never challenged the rest of the event.

Dunkin usually runs the outside groove to make his way through the field, but he had the whole track to himself on this night. Jimmy Castleberry converted an inside second row starting spot into a second place finish as the "old men" (with 65 years of racing experience between them) took first and second in the feature, and won their respective heats.

Castleberry fell back several car lengths toward the end of the race as his car had the left rear brake rotor glowing cherry red on the straightaways and it got even brighter when he stabbed the brakes going into the turns. At the end, Castleberry was able to hold off points leader Richard Elkins Jr. (up from sixth), Ron Lofquist (who started 13th), and Robbie Storer (up from 11th), who finished third through fifth. Storer had made the pass of Elkins for third, earlier, but a caution put him back to fourth, and Lofquist was able to get by for the fourth spot at the checkered flag. Dunkin and Castleberry won their heats.

The 25 lap Street Stock Feature had another green to checker winner as Paul Gibbs started from the pole and led all the way for his third feature win of the season. Points leader James Wright III kept the pressure on Gibbs the last half of the race, after making his way to the front from a twelfth place start. Wright has just about clinched his first points championship with the second place finish, as he had an 82 point lead going into tonight's racing, and second place Ron Lofquist was involved in an early race accident, putting him out of the feature. Michael King was third at the finish, followed by Donnie Harp in fourth and Richard Todd in fifth. Gibbs and Brian Donahue were the heat winners.

Eugene Davidson drove to the front early in the Modified Mini Stock 25 lap feature and was never challenged to take his third win of the season. Davidson started on the outside of the fifth row and only needed about 6 laps to get to the lead. Jay Kaminski also had to come through the pack after an eleventh place starting position, taking second at the finish.

Scott Sharpe was third, followed by points leader Tony Davidson, and Duane Parker. Parker had a tire cut down in an early race incident and had to go to the pits to get a replacement. He restarted on the rear and drove to fifth. Heat Race winners were Eugene Davidson and Sharpe.

In V8 Pure Stock, Johnny Vaughn won his first feature of the season, with Sam Cressman chasing him the entire 15 lap event to take second. Willie Lacey worked his way to third after starting in ninth. Bob Gorsuch was fourth, up from 13th, and Lee Hawkins rounded out the top five. Cressman and Josh Haranda won their heat races.

The 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks 15 lap feature was won by Hugh Williams, his second of the season. Matt Craig made a last lap pass to take second, with points leader Chris Narramore third, Randy King fourth, and Mark Soule fifth. Narramore has essentially locked up the points championship, in this, his rookie season. Williams was a double winner tonight, as he also won the heat race.

The Classic Cars returned to Auburndale with Rodney Eary winning the feature and increasing his lead in the points of this touring series for '30's style race cars. Frank Conrad was second, with Jim Rahman third, Ed Yates fourth, and Danny Shearer fifth. Heat races went to by Conrad and Shearer.

Racing returns Nov. 13, with the final points night of the season for the Limited Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stock, V8 Pure Stock, and 4 Cylinder Pure Stock. Also on the schedule are the Dwarf Cars and Kid's Club. Race time is 7:00 PM. On Nov 20th, the Annual Demolition Derby is scheduled, along with Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stock, V8 Pure Stock, 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks, Allison Legacy cars and a Powder Puff race. Tickets for the Dec. 12 Banquet are available until Dec 7th at the Speedway office.
